The 2022 Grant Application Process is Underway
The 2022 Gilchrist Foundation grant process is officially underway! All Requests for Consideration for Invitation are due today, April 1, 2022. Last year the Foundation awarded $1,734,652 to more than 40 nonprofit organizations across the Siouxland area.
The Application Process
Each year, the Gilchrist Foundation awards millions in funds each year to deserving nonprofit organizations in and around Sioux City. But grants are only given out to pre-selected charities (the Gilchrist Foundation does not accept unsolicited invitations for funds). Nonprofits whose missions align with the Foundation – including the arts, wildlife and conservation, public broadcasting and disaster relief – have until April 1, 2022 to request an Invitation to Apply. This request is a pre-qualifier and can be submitted online or a PDF can be downloaded and mailed to:

A History of Giving
The Gilchrist Foundation was established by Jocelyn Gilchrist of Sioux City to honor her family. Jocelyn was born in 1910 in Sioux City to William F. and Lulu Gilchrist. She attended Brownell Academy in Omaha, Neb. but lived in Sioux City for most of her life. Her father was an influential part of the livestock industry in the early and mid-1900s.
In 1912, William helped develop a serum to combat the cholera that was crippling the United States hog industry. The discovery was called “one of the most important and valuable scientific attainments of the present century,” and led to the founding of The Sioux City Serum Company, which was the largest US manufacturer of the anti-hog cholera serum. The company later became an affiliate of Allied Laboratories, Inc. and William was named treasurer of Allied Laboratories and continued as a key asset to the livestock industry throughout the Midwest and much of the United States until his death in 1941. He and his wife Lulu were strong advocates for community service—an advocacy that continues today thanks to the Gilchrist Foundation.
About Jocelyn Gilchrist
Jocelyn created the Gilchrist Foundation in honor of her family. She used the wealth accumulated by her family to give back to the community, especially in the areas that were her biggest passions. Jocelyn was interested in the arts and wildlife from an early age and became a supporter of public broadcasting and disaster relief in her later years.
As a young woman, Jocelyn frequented The Chicago Symphony and the Chicago Art Institute and enjoyed the theater. She grew a deep fondness for the arts, both live and on the radio. She also loved animals and nature. Some of her favorite memories were visits to DeSoto Bend and family vacations to Leech Lake in Minnesota. She also grew up sharing her mother Lulu’s interest in community service and developed a soft spot for disaster relief.
Jocelyn supported all these interests – the arts, wildlife and conservation, public broadcasting and disaster relief – throughout her lifetime both personally and through the Foundation. After her death in 2008, the Gilchrist Foundation continued to support these philanthropic interests.
The Foundation is passionate to support the causes that were near and dear to Jocelyn Gilchrist’s heart by awarding four types of grants: project grants, micro-grants, endowment grants and capital campaign grants. You can learn more about the entire application process here.

April 1, 2022 – Request for Consideration for Invitations due.
May 27, 2022 – Final reporters for 2021 grants are due unless other arrangements have been made.
June 24, 2022 – 2022 Grant Applications are due by 5 p.m.
