Gilchrist Foundation Helps Bring Saturday in the Park to Sioux City

Every Saturday around the Fourth of July tens of thousands of people gather in Grandview Park in Sioux City for the FREE annual Saturday in the Park (SITP) music festival. The event, which has been a summer staple since 1991, is funded by generous donors and sponsors, including the Gilchrist Foundation.

 

In 2023, the Foundation awarded SITP a $150,000 project grant for the 2024 festival. It has supported SITP since the beginning.

 

The 2024 Musical Lineup

SITP is known for its eclectic mix of musical traditions. Live music acts perform at two different stages throughout the day, starting at Noon.

 

The Main Stage

The Main Stage bandshell showcases a diverse lineup of talented musicians, from local favorites to renowned headliners, filling the air with joy and excitement.

  • National Anthem – Noon

  • Lonesome Creek – 12:05 p.m. Father-daughter duo Travis Barnes and Aubree Zellmer have a sound that blends folky and alternative. Joined by Tom Hunting, Jonathan Carlin and Noah Towns, Lonesome Creek features soulful tunes and an overall unique sound.

  • Tuff Roots – 12:45 p.m. Tuff Roots is a reggae band based in South Dakota. Tuff Roots has an easygoing, classic reggae vibe with a smooth, dynamic edge.

  • Andy Frasco & The U.N. – 2 p.m. Andy Frasco & The U.N. are loved for their kaleidoscopic musical fusion, one-of-a-kind onstage audacity and contagious party-animal energy.

  • Nikki Lane – 3:30 p.m. Lane’s latest album, Denim & Diamonds, combines her wide-ranging influences from psychedelia to country.

  • Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs – 5 p.m. Mike Campbell was a member, architect and co-captain of the Heartbreakers, a band he co-founded with Tom Petty, along with co-writing many of their hits.

  • Del Water Gap – 7:15 p.m. Del Water Gap is the indie pop solo project of S. Holden Jaffe, an American musician and record producer based in Brooklyn, N.Y.

  • Bleachers – 9 p.m. Bleachers are fronted by globally celebrated, eleven-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, musician and producer, Jack Antonoff. Bleachers has built a huge following known for their impressive live shows and their sound which has redefined pop music.

 

The Abe Stage

The Abe Stage has become a destination for respected national, regional and local hip-hop and rock acts. From legendary artists such as Sir Mix A Lot, Face to Face, and Fetty Wap to up-and-coming artists such as Black Pistol Fire and Con Brio, the stage has grown into a solid stage with its own following.

 

2023 marked the 15th year since organizers Jason Reinert and Brandon Stowe brought it back. Find the Abe Stage on the northeast corner of Grandview Park, and be ready for a day of rock, metal, hip-hop and EDM to end the night.

  • Tryplytz – 12:30 p.m.

  • Rvrnd – 1:20 p.m.

  • Fatal Fall – 2:20 p.m.

  • Electric Texas – 3:20 p.m.

  • Ro Hempel – 4:30 p.m.

  • Black Joe Lewis – 5:50 p.m. Black Joe Lewis is an American blues, funk and soul artist influenced by Howlin' Wolf and James Brown. He formed Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears in Austin, Texas, in 2007.

  • Paul Wall – 7:15 p.m. Paul Wall is an American rapper, DJ, and promoter from Houston, Texas. He has spent much of his career affiliated with Swishahouse and has released several albums under the label and collaborated with numerous other rappers signed to the label.

  • Twista – 8:30 p.m. Twista is a Grammy-nominated multi-platinum Recording artist who made his recording debut on “Po Pimp,” a platinum single by his fellow Windy City rappers Do or Die. He is best known for his chopper style of rapping and for once holding the title of fastest English-speaking rapper in the world.

 

A Family-Friendly Event

While people come for the music, many stay for the entire festival experience, complete with art vendors, kids’ activities and some of the best food in the region.

 

Arts Alley

Arts Alley features an eclectic array of art vendors. In 2024, visitors will find a diverse selection of arts and creations for sale, ranging from jewelry and crystals to tie-dye apparel and wood designs. There are also chair massages and caricature artists.

 

Kid’s Zone

The Kid’s Zone offers many activities to keep young ones occupied during the festival. From bouncy inflatables to entertainers, delicious food vendors and a variety of activities, there's something for every child to enjoy throughout the day. It's the perfect place for kids of all ages to have fun and stay entertained! An all-day wristband for the inflatables costs $20.

 

Eats Street

Eats Street will feature a great lineup of food vendors featuring festival favorites like barbecue, corndogs, turkey legs, gyros, tacos, pizza, funnel cakes and more. Vendors will be set up near the Main Stage, Abe Stage and Kids Zone.

 

SITP is a much-anticipated annual event for Sioux City and the surrounding areas. The event, which brings live music and the arts to the community, aligns with the Foundation’s purpose to further the missions of nonprofit organizations committed to the arts.

 

About the Gilchrist Foundation

The Gilchrist Foundation was established by Jocelyn Gilchrist of Sioux City to honor her family and their philanthropic interests. Jocelyn supported the arts, wildlife and conservation, public broadcasting and disaster relief throughout her lifetime both personally and through the Foundation. After her death in 2008, the Gilchrist Foundation continued to support these philanthropic interests.

 

Today, the mission of the Gilchrist Foundation is to further the philanthropy of its founder and her family with an emphasis on fostering the long-term viability of the charity and enabling special projects rather than supplying current operating funds.
